Converting a vineyard to organic is a decision one grower makes about one piece of land. The von Mandl group made it about forty-seven vineyards at once, strung along two hundred kilometres of the Okanagan Valley, which is close to an eighth of all the vineyard land in the region. Ecocert audited for the first time during the 2019 harvest and the certification completed in 2021.

Anthony von Mandl, who built the company, calls the stewardship non-negotiable and says the decision was never a profit one. Darryl Brooker, who runs Mission Hill, puts the payback at around ten years. In the meantime the herbicides went and the ploughs came back.

If British Columbia is not where you expect serious wine to come from, the Okanagan is worth a minute. It is a long, narrow valley in the province's dry interior with a lake down the middle that holds warmth into the autumn, and it sits far enough north that the summer days run long and the nights turn cold. Hot days and cold nights are the mechanism most cool-climate regions are built on: the sugar climbs while the acidity holds, which is what lets Bordeaux grapes ripen this far from Bordeaux without going soft.

Oculus is the bottle the estate is measured by, a red built on those Bordeaux varieties. In 2025 WineAlign made Mission Hill its Winery of the Year at the National Wine Awards of Canada, the sixth time since those awards began in 2001.

One gap here is ours rather than theirs. We have not obtained the Ecocert certificate number: Canada keeps no central operator registry and Ecocert Canada publishes separately from the provincial bodies, so there is no single register to check it against the way there is in Europe. It goes here when we have it.

Why it’s remarkable

47 vineyards
converted together rather than one at a time
The von Mandl group's holdings run about two hundred kilometres down the Okanagan and account for roughly an eighth of the valley's vineyard land. Ecocert audited from the 2019 harvest and finished in 2021, with Mission Hill, CedarCreek and Martin's Lane certified first and the rest following.
Ten years
is what the payback on the conversion is reckoned to take
Darryl Brooker's own estimate. Anthony von Mandl says the decision was never a profit one and calls the stewardship non-negotiable, which is easy to say and expensive to mean. Herbicides were dropped and ploughing came back in their place.
100 points
Oculus 2020 became the first Canadian red to be scored there
The score came from John Schreiner. In 2025 WineAlign also named the estate Winery of the Year at the National Wine Awards of Canada, its sixth since those awards began in 2001, and it has been listed among the World's 50 Best Vineyards.
Organic only
regenerative and biodynamic are practice here, not certificates
The group farms regeneratively and has described biodynamics as a later step, but neither is certified, so neither counts toward the score. That distinction is the whole point of a verification standard: what is claimed and what is certified are different things, and only one of them is checkable.

If you’re buying

Price
Around US$193 for Oculus, the flagship bottling. Approximate, and it moves with vintage and market.
Drinking now
The 2020 is open now, and reviewers put its window out toward 2040. It is the young bottles that want air, not the old ones.
Serving
Serve at 16–18°C. Decant a young bottle for thirty to sixty minutes.
Availability
Straightforward to find in Canada. Elsewhere it is a fine-wine merchant listing rather than a shelf wine.
Tastes like
A Merlot-led Bordeaux blend — cassis, dark cherry and a touch of chocolate, with tannins that stay silky rather than firm.
Pairs with
Roast lamb, a ribeye, or a hard aged cheddar.
Price bands are approximate and move with vintage, market and region. They are a guide, not a quotation.
