Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards
The Free Bacchus Story
Michael Lightfoot is a seventh-generation Annapolis Valley farmer, and the third generation of his family to farm the land the winery stands on. He and Jocelyn Lightfoot planted the first vines in 2009, released the first wines in 2015 and opened the winery to visitors in 2017.
The vines grow on forty acres across two sites along the shore of the Minas Basin, and the house works in cool-climate grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and German-style whites.

The farming is certified organic by Ecocert Canada, and Demeter USA includes Lightfoot & Wolfville on its list of certified biodynamic vineyards and wineries. The certificates follow the shape of the business: Ecocert lists Lightfoot Farms Limited as the farmer and Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards Ltd as the processor that makes the wine.
The Ancienne Chardonnay is the flagship, made the Burgundian way: whole-cluster pressed, fermented in barrel with wild yeast, and aged 21 months on its lees in mostly used French oak. The winery’s note for the 2022 finds golden apple, jasmine, lemon zest and a touch of marzipan, with lively acidity under the richness. The 2015 won Gold at the 2018 National Wine Awards of Canada.
