Aragon is the part of Spain that Spain forgets. It sits between Rioja and Catalonia, it has old Garnacha in quantity, and for most of the last century its job was to sell that fruit in bulk to people who put someone else's name on the bottle.

Garnacha is the grape, and at altitude on poor ground it does something the supermarket version never suggests. The old vines here are bush-trained and low, planted on slate and stone that hold very little, and they crop small without anyone asking them to. What comes out is pale for a Spanish red, scented rather than heavy, and built on acidity instead of alcohol — which is why El Jardín de las Iguales reads more like a wine from a cold place than a hot one.

Gnarled bush vines with fresh green shoots on a terraced slope, red poppies between the rows and a cross on the ridge above

El Jardín de las Iguales comes from one steep, north-facing slope in a side valley above Alpartir. A family called Paseta planted it between 1898 and 1908 and looked after it for more than a hundred years without ever selling a wine from it. Fernando Mora bought it in 2016 and has been rebuilding its old dry-stone terraces since, after American aerial photographs from 1943 and 1957 showed the whole site had once been vines.

Frontonio is certified organic by the Comité Aragonés de Agricultura Ecológica, and we read that certificate in the EU's TRACES register. Fernando Mora and Mario López also farm biodynamically, down to spraying ground quartz packed into cow horns, but that certificate is still on its way. The winery's own wine sheets say "in conversion" to Demeter, and Demeter Spain's register says the same. An earlier note on our row described the estate as "moving to biodynamic", and that is still the honest description.

Why it’s remarkable

A hundred years
of one family's care before anyone bottled it
The Paseta family planted Las Iguales between 1898 and 1908 and tended it for more than a century without ever selling a wine from it. Fernando Mora bought the vineyard in 2016. Even now it makes fewer than 1,500 bottles of red a year.
Organic, and in conversion
the biodynamic certificate is still on its way
The organic certificate comes from the Comité Aragonés de Agricultura Ecológica and runs to 31 March 2027. The estate farms biodynamically, and its own wine sheets list Demeter as in conversion. Demeter Spain's register says the same, and its date of 31 March 2026 had passed with no renewal when we read it on 9 October 2026.
Old bush vines on stone
small crops that nobody has to engineer
The vines are low, bush-trained and old, on slate and stone that hold very little water or fertility. A vine on that ground sets a small crop by itself. Frontonio farms them without irrigation, ploughs with a horse and does the rest by hand.

Certified1
  • Organic: Comité Aragonés de Agricultura Ecológica (CAAE, ES-ECO-006-AR), certificate ES-ECO-006-AR.724-0063221.2026.001 — Bodegas Frontonio, S.L., Alpartir, grapes and wine, valid to 31 March 2027
Also on record2
  • The certificate lists the grapes as organic production alongside non-organic production, with some grapes in conversion; it lists the wine as organic
  • Biodynamic: in conversion to Demeter, not full Demeter certification — Demeter Spain's register (BFDI ES-57079, processor and producer) gives the status 'Conversion to Demeter' with a validity date of 31 March 2026, which had passed with no renewal published when we read it on 9 October 2026

If you’re buying

Price
Around US$80 for La Cerqueta, a single-vineyard Garnacha, and about US$315 for El Jardín de las Iguales. Approximate.
Drinking now
Good to drink now, and Wine Advocate expects the 2023 to keep developing in bottle for a very long time. At 12.5% alcohol it is not a heavy wine.
Availability
Imported into the United States by Skurnik, and sold in Europe by merchants such as Vinissimus and Hedonism. The single-vineyard wines are small, from about 2,300 bottles of La Cerqueta to fewer than 1,500 of El Jardín de las Iguales.
Tastes like
Pale for a Spanish red, scented and red-fruited, built on acidity rather than alcohol.
