Caroline Cottrill thought she and Tim would be grape farmers, making a little wine for fun. Tim “had an ulterior motive”. He wanted a winery. Today the couple own Robin Ridge, at Keremeos in the Similkameen Valley, and make the wine themselves, with help from their children Jo, Charley, Esther and Ava. Tim studied viticulture at Okanagan College, and Caroline is the general manager.

The winery calls Gamay its signature wine. Gamay is the grape of Beaujolais, and it makes a lighter red than Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon — bright with red fruit, juicy, fresh rather than heavy. In British Columbia it accounts for only three to four per cent of red plantings, by a 2020 count, though Tim says it crops generously, at about five tons an acre, more than Pinot Noir. He ferments his with the grape skins in open vats for up to two weeks, then ages it in barrel, and says the result is a fuller-bodied Gamay that gains from time in the bottle. The critic Anthony Gismondi gave the Robin Ridge Organic Gamay 2018 and the Robin Ridge Organic Gamay 2021 90 points each, and found both red-fruited and juicy.

The Cottrills went organic, the winery says, because they did not want their family exposed to commercial sprays. In a 2021 Wines of British Columbia feature, Caroline said the vineyards “have been organic for many years”, and that “in 2018 we were proud to establish the winery itself as certified organic”. The winery puts its estate vineyard at 18 acres on the Similkameen Bench, and Tim describes his soil as “a foot of coarse sandy loam over gravel and a lot of rocks”.

At Robin Ridge, the year on the label matters. The organic certificate comes from PACS, the British Columbia certifier, under the Canada Organic Regime, and it names each wine by vintage, from 2018 to 2023. Gamay is on it for every vintage from 2018 to 2022. A wine is covered only in the years the list names it, so the 2016 Frigate Meritage, still on sale at the winery, is outside the certificate.

The tasting room has a patio over the vineyard, and picnics are welcome.

Why it’s remarkable

3 times a day
the Gamay’s skins are pushed back under as it ferments
For up to two weeks in open vats, the skins that float to the top are punched back down into the fermenting juice three times a day, before the wine goes to barrel. Tim Cottrill told Orchard and Vine in 2020 that the method makes a “more full-bodied Gamay that benefits from aging in the bottle”.
Geneva Double Curtain
the trellis the winery chose, and calls labour-intensive
Anthony Gismondi calls the Similkameen “wild, windy, rocky”. The winery picked this trellis to open the fruit to the valley’s sun, and took on the extra vineyard work that comes with it.
Discarded fruit
what the Cottrills first made wine from
The fruit was their parents’. Caroline made the wine after she and Tim married in 1993, and Tim took over when the children came. His first was a dry red from Rougeon, a hybrid grape.
2016
the Frigate Meritage still on sale, and outside the certificate
PACS names each wine by vintage, from 2018 to 2023. The 2016 Frigate Meritage, at CA$38.25 the most expensive bottle in the winery’s shop, is older than the list and is not covered.

If you’re buying

Price
About US$19 for the Gamay. The winery’s shop lists the 2022 Gamay at CA$27.25, converted here at the European Central Bank’s reference rates of 9 October 2026, and no US retailer was found. Approximate, and it moves with vintage.
Availability
In Canada only. The winery’s online shop ships in British Columbia (six-bottle minimum) and, on request, to other provinces; the winery says it does not ship to Nunavut or internationally. The 2022 Gamay was out of stock there on 10 October 2026, and BC Liquor Stores lists a Robin Ridge Gamay Organic with no vintage named.
Tastes like
The winery describes the 2022 Gamay as blueberry and raspberry with a hint of violets and cinnamon, bright, juicy and fresh, ending long and stony.
Pairs with
Smoked meat, roasted duck or grilled eggplant, the winery suggests.
