Neisson
The Free Bacchus Story
Adrien and Jean Neisson founded the distillery at Le Carbet in 1931. Jean was a trained chemical engineer and spent his time on the distillation itself. The square Zépol Karé bottle the house is recognised by arrived at the start of the 1950s.
What comes out of it is rhum agricole, made from fresh cane juice pressed within hours of cutting. Most rum in the world is made from molasses, a by-product of sugar refining that is already several steps removed from any particular field. Agricole’s supply chain is short enough to check, which is the entire reason this category can be verified at all.
The estate converted to organic farming in 2013 and released the first organic AOC rhum in 2016. That is harder than it sounds: the Martinique appellation dictates cane varieties, harvest windows, fermentation and distillation parameters, and an organic certificate has to fit inside all of it without breaking any.

The Robb Report named the XO, the house flagship, Best Organic Rhum Agricole. The style is dry and grassy in a way molasses rum never is.
Cane in tropical agriculture is normally heavily treated. A certified organic estate distilling its own harvest under an appellation that specifies the method is about as checkable as a spirits supply chain gets — and checkable is the only thing this site can actually score.
