Nc'nean sits on the Morvern peninsula, a place most easily described by what is not there: no mains gas, no nearby town of any size, and for a long stretch of the drive in, no other traffic.

Annabel Thomas built a distillery there from scratch, which meant every decision about how it would run was still open — a rarer position than it sounds, since most distilleries inherit their infrastructure and their habits together. The barley is organically grown and Scottish, the site runs on renewable energy, and in 2020 the distillery was verified as net zero in its own operations. It also released the first bottle in the UK made entirely from recycled clear glass.

The in-house verdict on organic barley when they started was that it was an expensive waste of money. It then turned out to give the whisky a depth of flavour nobody had expected.

Being new is usually a disadvantage in Scotch, where age statements and heritage do much of the selling. Here it is closer to the point: nothing had to be retrofitted, and no existing supply arrangement had to be unpicked. The whisky itself has been well received on its own terms rather than as a sustainability story, which is the outcome that matters.

Our listing carries a note about availability: this is a small operation and allocations are genuinely limited. That is a feature of the scale rather than a marketing device, and it is worth knowing before you go looking.
